Slot is a web and mobile app that configures booking by time instead of service. SLOT searches only for services that are available within a user's time constraint.

The Situation

Most people have enough expendable income—but not enough time or skill— for services like hairstyling, lawncare, or home repair. Many booking applications target this market by offering  a filtered list of vendors. But Angie's List, Thumbtack, Houzz, Homeadvisor, and others overlook the central parameter for service booking: time.

The User/Customer

The services noted above use location and industry as their primary search parameters. While a user may like a provider on their lists they will be forced to look elsewhere when that provider does not have available slots. Booking must begin by listing ONLY those vendors whose available slots match user needs.

The Constraints

Any digital product which offers a solution must have a way to coordinate variable user times and provider's available slots. Put together, their integration would benefit customers who are derailed by unavailability and businesses who suffer from cancellations .

The Solution

SLOT LLC sought a simple web and app interface that could constrain search parameters, issue a conditional vendor list in return, allow for in-app booking, and do each without user confusion.

The Design

The application's visual identity should be memorable, simple, and correspond to the central theme of time. The name SLOT points both to vendor openings ("I have a slot available...") and user selection ("Slot it"). The tick mark and O in the namemark display the double meaning of time and selection.

The Application

The aesthetic aim was to simplify the interface while staying in brand. The opening menu should maintain the proper sequence of conditions (time–location–service). The brand colors operate as visual guides for interactions and behaviors. The orange represents clickable  decisions or interactions.

Usability

Much like the design, the interactions themselves should be rectilinear and only circular insofar as it relates to time. Here I have added an interactive prototype. You can click around on the actual graphic here below.
